Easy High Protein Smoothie Recipes

In the past, smoothies have gotten a bad reputation because they are full of processed sugars and other ingredients you can’t pronounce, so they couldn’t possibly be considered a healthy food. While this might be true for most smoothies you purchase at smoothie shops, did you know you could make easy high protein smoothies right in your own kitchen?

Why do I love smoothies?

Smoothies are convenient

Just add your ingredients to a blender, push the blend button, pour into your glass, and drink. To make it even more convenient, you can prepare your smoothie ingredients ahead of time. Fill a quart size baggie with your favorite smoothie ingredients and store in the freezer until ready to use. Frozen ingredients help make your smoothie icy cold and thick. Need to drink your smoothie while on the go? Simply pour into your favorite drink bottle, and you have a healthy on the go meal in minutes.

Smoothies can be a great way to fuel your day

Using a handful of nutrient-dense ingredients, a smoothie is a deceptively simple way to add protein, calcium, fiber, and vitamins to boost your immune system and jump-start your metabolism.

A basic smoothie recipe is easy to build upon

Throw in some spinach, kale, or berries to the blender to strengthen the antioxidant power.

Smoothies use whole foods

Unlike juicing, which extracts the juices out of fruits and vegetables, separating them from the pulp, smoothies give you the whole food. When blending a smoothie, you are blending every last bit of the fruits and vegetables you use. This means the skin, the meat of the fruit or vegetable, sometimes the seeds, and most of the time, the skin. With a smoothie, you are getting all the benefits of the pulp, which generally gets discarded when juicing. Using whole fruits like pears, apples, bananas, and berries in your smoothies add tons of insoluble fiber to your diet. This means you will be a lot closer to getting your recommended grams of fiber each day.

I think I will try the breakfast one for next week. It saves money and time and I love that they are whole foods. What type of blender do you use by the way? Any brand in particular you recommend?  Thanks for sharing these yummy recipes!

    1. Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment! Out of all of the smoothie recipes I have made, I think the banana chocolate smoothie is by far, my favorite. The breakfast smoothie is also a favorite. You asked about the type of blender I use. My choice is a Vitamix blender. It’s a bit pricey, but it has never failed me. I use it to make everything from smoothies, to soups, to “ice cream”. I have even used it to make homemade salad dressings.

  4. Hey Kathy, great post.

I absolutely agree with you on the advantages of the smoothies vs juices. Most people think juices are very healthy but they don’t realize that by juicing the fruit they’re actually consuming only the sugars which are easier processed together with the fiber they just trashed.

I’m definitely going to try a few of these yummy recipes.

  5. Hi,  Kathy.  Thank you for sharing the great info about smoothie.  What fruits can supply the protein for our body?  I have already love eating various fruits because of the delicious taste.  It is great that we can mix various fruits and vegetables to fulfil our body’s need. Do you think that consuming smoothie more beneficial than eating the fresh fruits?

    1. Hi Melani! Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to leave a comment. You asked what fruits can supply protein. This is a good question because when most people think of foods with protein, they automatically turn to meat, whole grains, and legumes. although fruit doesn’t provide as much protein, it can be a source of protein. A one cup serving of following fruits can provide between 1-10% of your daily required protein intake: guavas, avocados, apricots, kiwifruit, blackberries, oranges, bananas, cantaloupe, raspberries, and peaches. Do I think consuming a smoothies to be more beneficial than eating the fresh fruits? This is only my opinion, but I do think drinking a smoothie is more beneficial than consuming a piece of fresh fruit. The reason is a smoothie contains other ingredients, which provide more nutrients. Don’t misunderstand me. I do think eating fresh fruit is beneficial too.
